Treatment of Urinary Incontinence Using Nitrone Spin Traps

Urinary incontinence is treated by administration of pharmaceutical compositions containing at least one nitrone spin trap such as α-phenyl t-butyl nitrone (PBN) and derivatives thereof. Preferred compositions and methods of treatment further include at least one adjunctive ingredient including fatty acid esters of ascorbic acid such as ascorbyl palmitate and ascorbyl stearate, and polyenylphosphatidylcholine.

1. A method for decreasing micturition frequency in a patient, comprising administrating to the patient a pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a therapeutically effective amount of at least one nitrone spin trap having the formula:wherein
X is phenyl or substituted phenyl with up to five substitution groups on the phenyl ring, wherein each said substitution groups is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkaryl, alkoxyl, alkenyl and amino, and Y is selected from the group consisting of alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, naphthyl, heterocyclic, alkcycloalkyl, cycloalkyl, and cycloalkenyl.
