[Also in Groups XXII and XXVIII] A foraminous thimble-type strainer or filter for liquid or gases is formed of compressed knitted wire mesh. Knitted metallic mesh material is wound in several layers 20 on a mandrel 16 and a wad 21 of similar material is inserted into the open end of tube formed by the wound mesh. The assembly is then placed in a die 11 and an annular compression plunger 18 moved down, first by itself and then together with the mandrel 16, to compress the fabric material into a unitary thimble structure. The wad 21. may be dispensed with. The filter so formed may be screwed onto the end of a threaded pipe or, as in Fig. 5, onto a threaded bush 26 threaded to a pipe 27. An exterior clamp band may also be provided to hold the filter on the pipe.</p> |
