<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a conveying device and conveying method which can reduce space and equipment cost in a production line, while facilitating a change of a length of the production line. <P>SOLUTION: The conveying device 1 includes a conveying part 8 coupling together a plurality of carriages 2, a drive source applying a driving force to the conveying part 8, and an AGV 3 transferring the carriage 2 detached from the conveying part 8. In the production line 10, the conveying part 8 is made to travel in a conveying direction along a conveying route R of a workpiece 9, the first carriage 2P that heads the respective carriages 2 of the conveying part 8 is detached from the conveying part 8 and is transferred by the AGV 3 to the upstream of the second trail carriage 2Q of the respective carriages 2 of the conveying part 8, and the first carriage 2P is coupled to the rear of the second carriage 2Q to keep the conveying part 8 arranged on the conveying route R of the production line 10.
