The apparatus has a light source (2) for generating the stimulation light beam (3) for stimulating the storage phosphor layer (1) to emit the light. A deflector (4) deflects the stimulating light beam in such a manner that the deflected stimulation light beam (3') moves over the storage phosphor layer. A drive unit (5) drives the deflector by release of drive energy to the deflector depending on the position of the deflected stimulation light beam (3') and/or depending on angular position of the deflector. An independent claim is included for method for reading x-ray information stored in phosphor layer.
