In a boiler furnace of the kind having a smoke-combustion chamber 23 formed between the firebridge 12 and an apertured baffle wall 24, air, preheated by passage through the ashpit 16 is admitted to a duct 15a in the firebridge through apertures 17, controlled by a damper 19, in a plate 18 supporting the rear end of the grate 11, the air passing from the duct 15a partly through nozzles 14 directed vertically upwards through the top of the bridge and partly through nozzles 21 into the chamber 23. The apertures 28 in the baffle wall 24 are arranged below the level of the top of the bridge and their dimensions are such that their combined area is less than that of the space directly above the bridge 12. |
