Self-testing monitoring sensor

The sensor (1) has a transmitting unit (2) i.e. transmission LED, emitting infra red-light cone (4), where the sensor is covered with an infrared permeable plastic. A receiving element (3) and a matrix-like single radiation sensor (7) detect the infra red-light. The sensor detects radiation objects (5) in a monitoring area. A testing unit performs a function test for a sensor component and comprises an evaluation arrangement that verifies a signal from the receiving element, or a signal of the transmitting unit for plausibility based on reception activity during transmission operation.
