A stitching station (24) has stitching slides (107G,107K) with stitching heads and moves with a stitching-slide drive mechanism (140) during a stitching process at the speed of gathered paper/cardboard call numbers/shelf-marks (30G,30K). Between the stitching-slide drive mechanism and the stitching slides there is a switching unit (160) for adapting stitching-slide motion to a clearance (G,K) between gathered paper/cardboard call numbers/shelf-marks fed into the stitching station and those fed in subsequently.
