摘要 Encoding an array of data values as data sets 2030-2050 and escape codes 2070, the escape code comprising a prefix portion and a non-unary suffix, the coded suffix portion having a bit length dependent on the value encoded by the prefix portion such that for at least some values, the length of the suffix is greater than the length of the prefix. Preferably, the prefix is a unary or truncated unary encoded value. The relationship between the lengths of the prefix and suffix may be defined by a flag or parameter sent with the encoded data or may be defined by a table. Preferably the suffix length is an exponential function of the value encoded by the prefix, which allows the code to represent a large number of different values with a smaller maximum code length than standard exponential Golomb codes. In embodiments the data arrays are blocks of video data samples and the data sets are significance maps 2030 or maps indicating the positions of data values which are greater than one 2040 and greater than two 2050.
