The present invention relates to a device and a method for interrupting a battery current by a latch relay method for the latch relay for interrupting a high current to be turned on normally after being turned off. The present invention provides a device and a method for interrupting a battery current for a vehicle for first conducting a self-diagnosis if a short circuit of the vehicle is settled when a latching relay for interrupting a high current is turned off (open) and then is turned on (closed) again and returning the latch relay only when the vehicle is not in a short circuit status but in a normal status, thereby preventing contact point fixation by a latch relay return in a short circuit status and guaranteeing the reusability of the latch relay.
