Real-time rate control mechanism for multi-rate data transmissions in wireless networks

Wireless networks are becoming increasingly heterogeneous in terms of the processing capabilities of network users' receiving equipment. According to embodiments of the innovation, in a communications network comprising a plurality of receivers with different data reception rate capabilities, data frames targeted to respective receivers may be transmitted to the receivers in accordance with the respective data reception rate capabilities of the receivers.

1. A method, comprising:
maintaining, by a system including a processor, a queue of frames respectively designated to be transmitted to target receivers, wherein at least two of the target receivers have different data reception rate capabilities; and iteratively, until a size of the queue satisfies a defined condition, selecting, by the system, an oldest frame of the frames for which it is determined that transmission to a respective target receiver of the target receivers does not exceed a data reception rate capability of the respective target receiver.
