1. A MRI system for acquiring MRI image data comprising:
first coils configured to deliver radio frequency energy to a volume and second coils surrounding the volume and the first coils and configured to deliver magnetic field gradient; a plurality of subunits including a first amplifier for powering the first coils and a second amplifier for powering the second coils; a power supply for receiving electrical power from an alternating current electrical mains and providing a direct current; a power bus configured to connect the power supply to the plurality of subunits to supply the plurality of subunits and the first and second coils with the direct current; and a controller configured to control the supply of the direct current to the plurality of subunits.
