System and method for processing a digital image

A sampling area may be defined wherein the sampling area at least partly overlaps with the segment. 1. A method for processing a digital image based on distinguishing an object in the image, the method comprising:
loading, from an image storage to a memory, a digital image and a segment defined therein, wherein the defined segment includes an object to be distinguished; defining at least one initial sampling area in the digital image, wherein the sampling area includes a point of interest in the image; manipulating at least one of a size, location, shape and orientation of the at least one initial sampling area to create a sampling area that is included in the defined segment; determining at least one characteristic value for said included sampling area by identifying a local feature in the included sampling area; and representing the digital image based on the at least one characteristic value.
