The invention provides a method for producing a fertile transgenic Gossypium hirsutum plant comprising the steps of: (a) establishing a regenerable callus culture from a Gossypium hirsutum plant to be transformed wherein said callus culture is selected from the group consisting of embryogenic, hypocotyl-derived, and embryogenic, cotyledon-derived callus culture; (b) selecting a plant cell aggregate therefrom for transformation; (c) transforming said plant cell aggregate with DNA by whisker-mediated transformation; (d) identifying transformed cell lines therefrom; and (e) regenerating fertile transgenic plants therefrom.
