摘要 Betaine and glutamic acid are obtained from molasses by the addition of one or more organic diluents, followed by or simultaneously with an acid whose salts with the cations present in the molasses are difficultly soluble or insoluble in the liquid medium, the precipitate is separated, the organic diluent evaporated, and the remaining liquid passed through one or more ion exchangers. The first is anionic and glutamic and pyrrolidone-carboxylic acid are retained; the second is cationic and holds betaine. Organic diluents are methyl and ethyl alcohol and acetone; whilst acids are sulphuric, sulphurous and phosphoric. Specification 744,114 is referred to.ALSO:Molasses is diluted with one or more organic liquids miscible therewith, an acid is added, either separately or with the organic diluent, whose salts with the cations present in the molasses are difficultly soluble or insoluble in the liquid medium, the precipitate is separated, the organic diluent evaporated, and the remaining liquid passed through one or more ion exchangers. The first exchanger is anionic and this holds the acids, whilst the second exchanger is cationic and this holds the betaine. Specified diluents are methyl alcohol, dilute ethyl alcohol and dilute acetone, whilst acids specified are sulphuric, sulphurous and phosphoric. Amounts added are-diluent, 0,6-2 kg. per kg. molasses; acid-to give a pH of 2-3,5. The precipitate may be formed at elevated temperatures, or after formation, be heated to such temperatures e.g. 35 DEG -80 DEG C. After precipitate removal sugar may first be recovered as described in Specification 744,114, but sugar may also be obtained from the syrup obtained from the liquid after its passage through the final exchanger.
