The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition including a Litsea populifolia extract as an active ingredient for preventing or treating cancer, and a food composition for preventing or alleviating cancer. A composition including a Litsea populifolia extract of the present invention does not exhibit toxicity to normal cells but show a cancer cell extinguishing effect by adjusting a cell period of cancer cells, so as to be usefully used as an anticancer composition. The composition can be used as a pharmaceutical composition or a food composition for preventing or treating cancer.
