A GIN STAND, ASSEMBLY AND METHOD

A gin stand for separating cotton fibre from seed cotton. The gin stand includes a set of gin saws and ribs for separating cotton fibre from the seed cotton; a header box into which the seed cotton is supplied, and a seed roil support assembly. The gin stand is arranged with the gin saws extending into the header box, whereby rotation of the gin saws forms a seed roll from the seed cotton within the header box. The assembly has at least two supporting members that are arranged In a widthwise direction across the gin stand, the supporting members being spaced from the gin saws and ribs, each supporting member co-operating with the header box to support a portion of the seed roll as cotton fibre is pulled from the cotton seeds by the gin saws; and an adjuster mechanism that is operably connected to the supporting members so as to move the supporting members between a plurality of operative positions relative to the gin saws during operation of the gin stand. Movement of the supporting members changes the diameter of the seed roil in the portion of the seed roll that is supported by the respective supporting member, thereby altering the density of the seed roll.
