Systems and methods for controlling communication systems for the hearing impaired are disclosed. A portable communication device requests control over a plurality of communication devices. The portable communication device connects to and controls the plurality of communication devices. The portable communication device includes a user interface that enables a user to transfer a call from a first communication device to a second communication device.

a video phone configured to:
enable a hearing-impaired user of the video phone to participate in a communication session with another user of another communication device;communicate through at least one of a personal area network and a local area network with a portable communication device at a same location as the video phone to receive commands corresponding to functions of the video phone; andcontrol functions of the video phone responsive to the commands received from the portable communication device, wherein the functions include at least one of:
placing an outgoing call from the video phone to the another communication device; andhandling an incoming call to the video phone from the another communication device.
