A water-soluble bisulphite addition product of 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone used as an animal feed ingredient may be prepared by grinding one mol. of 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone with preferably two mols. of finely ground sodium bisulphite passing through 30 mesh. About 16 mols. distilled water are added and a paste is made which is then dried on enamel trays under vacuum or in a current of air. Discolouring side reaction products are removed by agitating the powdered reaction product in 95 per cent ethyl alcohol for four hours. The sodium, calcium and alkanolamine bisulphites are preferably employed.ALSO:A water-soluble bisulphite addition product of 2 - methyl - 1,4 - naphthoquinone is added to an animal feed ingredient which normally causes a reduction in the prothrombin blood levels, to maintain normal prothrombin blood levels. The ingredient may contain solvent-extracted soy bean oil meal, a sulpha drug, an antibiotic or an arsonic acid. The bisulphite addition product is formed by reacting 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone with the bisulphite salt present in at least 1 : 1, preferably 2 : 1, molal ratio; the sodium, calcium and alkanolamine salts are preferred. Proportions of 0.00001 to 0.001 per cent by weight of the addition product may be added to a poultry feed composition, but especially 1 gram per ton of feed (0.00011 per cent).
