In an automatic transmission having a multistage transmission with, for example, ten or another number of speeds, a skip shift causes numerous engaging elements to operate, the shifting operation is complicated, and quick response is difficult. After three clutches (C1, C3, C4) are engaged to complete a seventh speed which is a directly coupled speed, the other remaining clutch (C2) is also engaged in the seventh speed. During a skip shift, in the case of, e.g., a 7-to-5 shift, the clutch (C1) is released, the other clutch (C2) remains engaged, control to release the clutch (C3) is performed, and control to engage a brake (B1) is performed, completing the fifth speed. This facilitates the operation of shifting from a directly coupled speed, and enables quick response.
