摘要 <p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect defects in ceramic filter bodies including a honeycomb structure defining many grooves.SOLUTION: Plugs 30 are used to seal ends 22 and 24 of selection grooves 20. A light source unit 52 and a detector unit 62 are used that are operably arranged at respective first and second ends 16 and 18 of the honeycomb structure. A light beam LB is transmitted from the light source unit to the detector unit through the grooves. By a defect of a specific plug, detectable portion of the corresponding light beam is detected. A detector element 64 is used to detect a detectable light beam and thereby obtain information on a location and an intensity variation, and the information thereon helps deduce the precise location and category of the defect. By two sets of light source units 52 and 52' arranged at opposite ends 16 and 18 and detector units 62 and 62' arranged at the opposite ends 18 and 16, a "double-ended" type system is configured that allows for the simultaneous measurement of the defect at both ceramic filter body ends.</p>
