A housing for an electronic device and a method for manufacturing the housing are provided that combine metal and plastic in an aesthetically pleasing manner while meeting physical and technical requirements and specifications for the electronic device. Metal islands may be engaged with a plastic member so that projections of the plastic member are interlocked with corresponding recesses of formed between each of the metal islands. An exterior of the housing includes a surface of each of the metal islands and at least a portion of a surface of the plastic member. The interior of the housing includes another surface of the plastic member.

1. A housing for an electronic device, comprising:
a plurality of metal islands, each of the plurality of metal islands having a first surface and a second surface opposite of the first surface; and a plastic member engaged with the plurality of metal islands, the plastic member having a third surface and a fourth surface opposite of the third surface, wherein:
the third surface of the plastic member is in contact with the second surface of each of the plurality of metal islands;the third surface of the plastic member comprises a plurality of projections that separate each of the plurality of metal islands; andthe plurality of projections interlocks with a corresponding plurality of recesses formed between each of the plurality of metal islands; wherein:
an exterior of the housing comprises the first surface of each of the plurality of metal islands and at least a portion of the third surface of the plastic member; andan interior of the housing comprises the fourth surface of the plastic member.
