Class 80(1) [Also in Groups VI and XXII] In a lathe accessory wherein a shaft 33 carrying a holder for a milling or other tool is journalled in a member adjustably supported on a slide 34 which may be bolted to the lathe saddle, the shaft 33 is driven from an input shaft 10 through pivotallyconnected rigid shafts 16, 24 having bevel or other gear connections so that the tool holder has a substantially universal movement. The shaft 16 is angularly movable about the axis of shaft 10 and is connected thereto by bevel gearing in a housing 14. Forked brackets 20, 21 formed with respective sleeves surrounding the shafts 16, 24 are pivotally-connected by a spindle 19 carrying a bevel gear which meshes simultaneously with bevel wheels on the shafts 16 and 24 so that the shaft 24 may move angularly both about the spindle 19 and about the axis of shaft 16. A similar pair of forked brackets and bevel gearing interconnect the shafts 24 and 33. The shafts 16, 24 are encased in loose sleeves spacing the forked brackets. In a modification, dispensing with the shaft 10, the shaft 16 is driven through a coaxial motor and changespeed-gear assembly which is pivotally supported about a horizontal axis. In a further modification, the shaft 16 comprises the output shaft of a pivotally-mounted gear box whose input shaft is connected to a driving pulley through a pair of flexible Joints. It is stated that the spindle 19 may carry a pair of bevel wheels meshing separately with wheels on the two shafts 16, 24, and that there may be a similar connection between the shafts 24 and 33. The bevel gearing may be replaced by worm gearing or by friction gearing having wheels of coned or other shape. The mechanism is stated to be applicable to dental drilling machines.
