This cutting tool comprises a base and a coating film that is formed on the base. The base is a sintered body that contains 30-80% by volume of cubic boron nitride and a binder. The surface of the base, which is in contact with the coating film, is provided with a plurality of projections that are formed of the cubic boron nitride and a plurality of recesses that are formed of the binder. The surface roughness (Rsub) of the surface of the base, said surface being in contact with the coating film, is 0.1-0.4 µm. The surface roughness (Rsurf) of the outermost surface of the coating film is 0-0.15 µm. The surface roughness (Rasurf) of the outermost surface of the coating film is 0-0.1 µm. The surface roughness (Rsub) of the surface of the base, said surface being in contact with the coating film, is larger than the surface roughness (Rsurf) of the outermost surface of the coating film. |
