[Also in Group XVII] Two sheet metal parts, for example a box 3 and its lid 7, are connected by a hinge pin 11 carried by a supporting arm 15 fixed to one part and engaging in a pocket or groove 8 pressed out of the other part, the pocket or groove being bridged by a member which only partially closes it. In the form shown, this member is formed by a foldeddown portion 9 of the box 3, this portion being cut away over part of the length of the pocket to allow the hinge-pin, which projects laterally from the arm, to be placed in the open part of the pocket and then slid along to lie behind the portion 9. The arm 15 is adjustable vertically on the lid 7 by means of elongated holes through which the fixing screws pass. In a modification, the portion 9 is replaced by a separate member secured, for example by welding, to the box 3. A lid with two hinges may have both pins 11 projecting to the same side of the arms 15, in which case it is detachable from the box by sliding it to bring the pins into the open parts of the pocket, or the pins may project in opposite directions in which case at least one has to be placed in position in the box before attaching it to the lid and the lid cannot be detached from the box. |
