The present invention discloses an organic electroluminescent element (organic EL element) which has a simple configuration and improved luminous efficiency, while ensuring sufficient driving stability. This organic EL element comprises organic layers, which contain a material for light emitting elements, between a positive electrode and a negative electrode that are laminated on a substrate, and the material for light emitting elements is composed of a carborane compound. This carborane compound is a branched carborane compound which has three or more carborane rings that are bonded via an aromatic group and one or more dibenzothiophene rings, and wherein at least one dibenzothiophene ring is bonded with a carborane ring.
