<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique which can suppress disarrangement in a positional correlation between written information and surrounding characters for outputting an electronic document to which the written information is added. <P>SOLUTION: A document management system comprises an electronic document acquisition unit, a written area extraction unit, a number of character adjustment unit, and a print preview image generation unit. The written area extraction unit extracts a written area WA1 from an electronic document. The number of character adjustment unit adjusts the number of character per line in the electronic document by changing the number of characters per line in a non-written area NA according to print output settings, on the other hand, without changing the number of characters per line in the written area WA1 for the number of characters per line when written information WR1 is written.
