摘要 An odourless, oil-soluble detergent additive for lubricating oils is prepared by phosphosulphurizing, e.g. with a phosphorus sulphide or a mixture of phosphorus and sulphur, a hydrocarbon-containing polymer or copolymer of mean molecular weight above 2000 at a temperature from 150 DEG to 350 DEG C. for 10 to 500 minutes, thereby removing the volatile, highly odiferous by-product. The polymeric material may be an isobutylene, butadiene, styrene or isoprene polymer, or an isobutylene-isoprene, butadiene-styrene, butadiene-acrylonitrile, isobutylene-isoprene-styrene or isobutylene-isoprene-acrylonitrile copolymer. The phosphosulphurization is preferably effected by refluxing in a mineral lubricating oil under a blanket of nitrogen and blowing with air or an inert gas to assist the removal of the volatile, odiferous byproduct. In an example a butyl rubber of molecular weight 40,000 is depolymerized by masticating with mercaptobenzthiazole to a molecular weight of 20,000, dissolved in a light mineral oil and heated with phosphorus pentasulphide.ALSO:An odourless, oil-soluble detergent additive for lubricating oils is prepared by phosphosulphurizing, e.g. with a phosphorus sulphide or a mixture of phosphorus and sulphur, a hydrocarbon-containing polymer or copolymer of mean molecular weight above 2,000 at a temperature from 150 DEG to 350 DEG C. for 10 to 500 minutes thereby removing the volatile, highly odoriferous by-product. The polymeric material may be an isobutylene, butadiene, styrene or isoprene polymer, or an isobutylene-isoprene butadiene - styrene, butadiene - acrylonitrile isobutylene - isoprene - styrene or isobutylene - isoprene - acryonitrile copolymer. The phosphosulphurization is preferably effected by refluxing in a mineral lubricating oil, e.g. a distillate oil or brightstock, and blowing with air an inert gas to assist the removal of the volatile, odoriferous by-product. In an example a butyl rubber of molecular weight 40,000 is depolymerized by masticating with mercaptobenzthiazole to a molecular weight of 20,000, dissolved in a light mineral oil and heated with phosphorus pentasulphide.
