Textile fabrics or fibrous materials in sheet or web form are impregnated with a liquid which will react chemically with an impurity in the material and the wet material is passed continuously in flat condition through a chamber having a heated, drying atmosphere of sufficient intensity to raise the temperature of the treatment liquid rapidly to a high value and cause its very rapid evaporation, and the treated material is then washed. The material treated may be card or paper or textile fabrics of cotton, linen, silk, rayon or artificial fibres. The treatment liquid may be an aqueous solution of soda lye, sodium hypochlorite or a mixture thereof which may include a wetting agent. The heating chamber may be maintained at pressures below or slightly above atmospheric and the heating may be effected by directing high speed streams of a heated, inert gaseous mixture or a mixture of superheated steam and an inert gas against the material. After leaving the heating chamber the material may be acidified and washed with soap and water. |
