550,046. Variable-speed gearing. GUY, S. S., and BULLOCK, W.E. June 13, 1941, Nos. 7461 and 7463. [Class 80 (ii)] In motor vehicle transmission gearing having a clutch 4 between the engine 2 and the speed gearing 3, a servo-motor 5 acting through a rod 10 and lever 9 continually tends to disengage the clutch 4 but is prevented from so doing by a fluid pressure servo-motor 6 supplied with pressure fluid through a pipe 8. A lever 11 is interconnected with the speed change lever 12 so that when the latter is moved to change gear the lever 11 actuates a valve 7 which disconnects the servomotor 6 from the pressure pipe 8 and connects it to an exhaust pipe 8a whereupon the servomotor 5 acts to disengage the clutch 4. A tail clutch in a casing 13 may be connected to the lever 9 by links 14, 15, 16 so that it is disengaged simultaneously with the clutch 4. The servomotor 5 is actuated from the engine intake manifold or from other source of negative pressure. |
