<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform flushing more efficiently during image formation. <P>SOLUTION: Ink discharge data for forming an image in an area larger than the width of a paper P and including an ink receiving area 51b is generated by setting the flushing data during the printing for discharging ink to the ink receiving area 51b and adding that data to the print data of one pass, and then a print head and a carriage are controlled based on the ink discharge data thus generated. Consequently, flushing can be carried out by discharging ink to the ink receiving area 51b during the printing, without having to switch from the print data to the flushing data.
