A method of separating earth into soil and larger objects such as stones, and apparatus therefor. The method involves providing an agricultural apparatus with a share and a sensor arrangement, then engaging the share with the ground and collecting earth, separating the collected earth into soil and larger objects such as roots or stones, depositing the soil and determining the depth of the deposited soil using the sensors. The apparatus comprises a share 18 for engaging the ground and collecting earth, and a conveyor 22, 26 for moving and separating the collected earth. A sensor (36, fig 3) is provided at a rear portion of the apparatus for measuring the height of the deposited soil. The sensor may use ultrasound, electromagnetic radiation or a physical probe. A control system is provided which compares the measured depth with a desired depth, and automatically adjusts the height of the share in the ground. |
