<p>A fluid flow sensor 1 comprises a chamber 2, a plurality of identical bodies 3 packed into the chamber defining a plurality of indirect fluid passages, means 4, 5 to direct a flow of fluid to be measured though the chamber 2 and means to determine a differential pressure between fluid adjacent to a first end of the chamber 2 and fluid adjacent to a second end of the chamber 2. There may be means to calculate a fluid flow rate from the differential pressure or an operator may determine it. The chamber 2 may have a constant cross section between the first and second ends. The identical bodies 3 may be solid and/or spherical, they may be ball bearings. The identical bodies 3 may be randomly packed, regularly packed or packed to approximate a close packing arrangement. The means 4, 5 to direct a flow of fluid may comprise inflow and outflow blocks, each may enclose a conical fluid chamber 6, 8, and may also comprise fluid inlet and outlet means 7, 9; these may comprise plenum chambers. There may be a gas flow sensing device. The fluid flow sensor 1 may be used with an anaesthetic ventilator.</p> |
