<p>An axle assembly (10 see fig 1) is provided for a vehicle (100 see fig 12). The assembly comprises an electric motor 215 or two electric motors (215A,B see fig 9). A wheel has a hub 260, having a gearbox mounted at least partially within, the gearbox receiving drive via a driveshaft 225 coupled to the motor 215. The driveshaft 225 includes a pivotable link 240 such that the hub 260 is steerable with respect to the motor 215. The link 240 may be a constant velocity joint or double Hookes joint. The assembly 10 may be used on a trailer or a heavy goods vehicle. A subframe (11 see fig 1) includes a bridge member (500 see fig 9) for bracing the motors (215A,B). Steering is lockable. Reduction gearing may be epicyclic. Electric drive is facilitated by the invention for operating lorries quietly with pollution reduction.</p> |
