<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To align a recording sheet without using a sheet size detection means and to evade the occurrence of serious wrinkle and tear caused by sending off the recording sheet from a bottom plate 610 in a condition of being greatly deflected. <P>SOLUTION: A sheet placement device is provided with: a movement stop means that cuts the drive transmission from a drive motor to side fences (611, 612) to stop the side fences when a load exceeding a given threshold is applied to the moving side fences; surface position displacement detecting means (692, 693) that detect the position displacement of the surface by the deflection of the recording sheet placed on the bottom plate 610; and a determination means that determines the presence or absence of the deflection of the recording sheet based on the detection result thereby.
