A chamber 2 arranged to supply air through an outlet thereof in a direction corresponding to the applied suction of an I.C. engine, has at least one inlet pipe 1 disposed transversely to that direction and communicating freely with the surrounding atmosphere, the pipe extending, or effectively extending, through the chamber and having a cross-section smaller than that of the chamber, and projecting beyond the walls of the chamber. An outlet aperture 9 formed, or effectively formed, in the pipe is located equidistantly from those parts of the pipe contacting the walls of the chamber. As shown in Fig. 1, the pipe 1, open at both ends, passes through, but projects from a chamber 2 of metal or rubber or other elastic material and of tapered, corrugated form, the length and volume of the pipe being acoustically matched to the chamber in accordance with the engine characteristics; the cross-sectional area of the aperture 9 in the pipe is greater than, preferably twice as great as, the crosssectional area of the pipe. A filter 3 is located at the outlet of the chamber, and the latter may be extended as indicated at 12. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the chamber tapers divergingly towards the carburetter, and is closed at one end by the pipe 1. In further modifications (a) the filter 3a, Fig. 4, extends across a chamber 2a, rectangular in shape, one end of the pipe 1a being closed, (b) Fig. 5 (not shown), a filter comprising helically wound metal strips is located between the ends of two aligned pipes extending into the chamber, one pipe only communicating with the atmosphere, (c) the chamber 2, Fig. 6, is divided into three chambers 13, 14 and 15 by a partition 17 and the outlet pipe 16, the air passing from the pipe 1 through the aperture 9 therein which may be covered by a metal strip filter, into the chamber 13, from the latter into the chamber 14 and then through a filter 23 into the chamber 15, the air again passing through the filter into the pipe 16 ; the annular cross-sectional area 8c of the chamber 13 is greater than that of the pipe 1, which may be in two parts. |
