Radial arm saw safety top

A radial arm saw is adapted with a safety top configured with cutting box enclosure that contains and collects substantially all of the sawdust generated during use. A dust collection system is in fluid communication with the cutting box for removing the sawdust contained therein. Spring biased push blocks function to hold the work piece in place during the sawing process while maintaining the user's hands safely away from the saw blade. A laser alignment device projects a beam within the cutting box along the cutting plane. A control panel is provided to allow use by authorized users upon entry of an authorization code.

1. A safety top for connection to a radial arm saw, said safety top comprising:
a planar top work surface to be connected to a table of a radial arm saw; a rip fence extending vertically upward from the planar top work surface, the rip fence having a gap therethrough; at least one work piece securing element movable toward and away from said rip fence for securing a work piece to the rip fence; and a cutting box disposed on top of said work surface, said cutting box defining an interior bounded by a cutting box top, opposing side walls, and a front wall, wherein said cutting box to is in spaced relation with said work surface; at least one of said side walls including a portion thereof having means for receiving the work piece so that the work piece can be at least partially inserted within said cutting box; said front wall extending from one of the side walls to the other of the side walls and enclosing a front end of the cutting box; said cutting box top fixed relative to said side walls, extending from one of the side walls to the other of the side walls, and substantially enclosing a top of the cutting box, said cutting box top defining an elongate slotted aperture therethrough, said elongate slotted aperture extending substantially perpendicular to the rip fence and aligned with the gap in the rip fence, the elongate slotted aperture and the gap defining a path for receiving and allowing a lower portion of a saw blade to travel along the slotted aperture and through the gap in the rip fence as the blade travels during a sawing process; and said cutting box adapted to be in fluid communication with a dust collection system for collecting sawdust.
