A method of receiving a call by recognizing a posture of a user in a portable terminal is provided. The method includes identifying whether a call reception event occurs, detecting a motion in which the user brings the portable terminal to an ear by using a posture detecting sensor, when the call reception event occurs, and connecting the call upon detecting the motion.

1. A portable terminal comprising:
a first sensor configured to sense motion; a second sensor configured to sense a proximity of the portable terminal to an object; and a controller configured to:
detect a call reception;detect a motion of the portable terminal via the first sensor after detecting the call reception;detect the proximity of the portable terminal to the object via the second sensor; andestablish a call connection in accordance with the call reception if the motion is matched with a predetermined movement and is completed within a preset amount of time and if a detected proximity value of the second sensor of the portable terminal to the object is in a predetermined range.
