摘要 740,718. Seaming veneers. TORWEGGE MASCHINENFABRIK, F. May 20,1953 [May 23, 1952; Oct. 1, 1952], No. 14128/53. Class 42 (1). A veneer-joining machine, which automatically compensates for differences in spacing between the rear edge of edge-butted veneer strips and the front edge of a succeeding strip to be glued on, comprises upper and lower conveyers for the edge-butted strips, feeding means suppoited by a table for advancing successive strips towards the said conveyers at a higher speed than the conveyers, means for intermittently driving the conveyers, and means adapted to parallel the front edge of a successive veneer strip with the rear edge of the previously-fed strip, the latter means being actuated by the successive strip to render the conveyer driving means operative. As shown, Fig. 2, a veneer strip i is fed transversely to its length along a table a between driven lower feed rollers b and spring-pressed upper feed rollers e. Guide boards l, located between adjacent series of rollers e and converging on table a, are spaced from table a by about the thickness of a veneer. Previously butted veneers are fed forward between chain or belt conveyers f, c as shown in Fig. 5 until the trailing edge i<SP>1</SP> of the last veneer i<SP>2</SP> clears at least one of two feeler rollers n, located at opposite sides of table a, whereat a switch o<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, is operated to interrupt the drive to conveyers f, c. As the new veneer i is fed forward, a straightening plate (not shown) is pushed ahead thereby up to the edge i<SP>1</SP> of veneer i<SP>2</SP>, either of conveyers f, c being capable of slipping over veneer i until the leading edge thereof is parallel to edge i<SP>1</SP>; in this position veneer i depresses both rollers n, thereby restoring the drive to conveyers f, c and causing the straightening plate to be raised by a magnet. Raising of the straightening plates leaves a slight gap between the front edge of veneer i and edge i<SP>1</SP> of veneer i<SP>2</SP>; since the feed speed of rollers b is greater than that of conveyers c, f, this gap is gradually closed so that the two veneers are butted along their longitudinal edges to which glue had been previously applied. To assist the operator in feeding tapering veneers as shown, one or more signal lamps w connected to rollers n indicate which of the two rollers is no longer in contact with the veneers and hence indicate which way to feed the follow - ing veneer. Rollers n may be replaced by photo-cells mounted above table a and lamps mounted below. Conveyers f, c feed the successively butted veneers between heating plates h, Fig. 5, and h<SP>1</SP> (not shown), which may be electrically heated, whereby the glue at the butted edges is dried. The heating plates are spaced apart only sufficiently to allow the veneers to pass between, whereby corrugated veneers are kept flat during glue-setting. The heating plates h, h<SP>1</SP>, guide rails for conveyers f, c respectively, and frame g carrying rollers e, are all height-adjustable. Rollers e and b may be replaced by upper and lower conveyer chains, or by upper rollers co-operating with lower chains.
