Disclosed is a quaternary ammonium anti-agglomerant composition of formula (I), wherein the substituents are as defined in the specification. Also disclosed is a method of using the compositions to inhibit the formation of gas hydrate particles in a fluid comprising water, gas, and optionally liquid hydrocarbon comprising adding to the fluid an effective anti-agglomerant amount of a compound of formula (I).
