The present invention provides an apparatus for hot dip coating, comprising: a hot dip coating tub; an ingot melting tub disposed inside or around the hot dip coating tub to produce a plating solution by melting supplied ingot in a reducing atmosphere shielded from the outside and to discharge the plating solution to the hot dip coating tub; and a level measurement and control part which measures the level of the hot dip coating tub to control the plating solution discharged to the hot dip coating tub or ingot supplied to the ingot melting tub in accordance with the measurement result. In addition to this, the present invention provides a method for hot dip coating, comprising: an ingot melting step; a level measurement and control step; and a hot dip coating step. According to the present invention, the apparatus and the method for hot dip coating prevent oxidation dross and explosion caused when the ingot is directly supplied to the hot dip coating tub as the ingot is melted in the ingot melting tub separated from the hot dip coating tub in a reducing atmosphere shielded from the outside; and prevent the surface defects of a hot dip coating steel sheet caused by the rapid changes in the level of a plating bath by controlling the supply of ingot in accordance with the measured level of the plating bath.
