In a machine for cutting hard metal bars, cutting is effected by two pairs of members which grip the bar on each side of the cutting plane and exert a combined shearing and torsional force to cut the bar. The cutting mechanism is housed in recesses in front and rear blocks 1 and 2, respectively which are secured together. The front pair of cutting members 4a, 4b are located in a recess 5 in a disc 3 rotatable in the front block 1 and are held in place by a pawl 9 pivotally mounted in the front block. The rear pair of cutting members 17a, 17b are located in a recess 16 in a disc 15 rotatably carried in an aperture in a lever 12 mounted in the rear block 2 and are held by a pawl 18 pivotally held in the lever 12. A bar may be passed through slots in the blocks 1 and 2 and apertures formed by the pairs of cutting members, these apertures being of the same shape as the cross-section of the bar. The discs 3, 15 are journalled on a common axis. When the lever 12 is lowered the pawl 18 causes the cutter members 17a, 17b to grip the bar which is carried downwards, rotating the disc 3 until the pawl 9 urges the cutting members 4a, 4b to grip the bar and prevents their further movement. Completion of the actuation of the lever 12 cuts the bar by a combined shearing and twisting action.</p> |
