An apparatus for producing an object has an additive printing device 20 for producing a three-dimensional object in a plurality of layers, and a measuring device 22 for measuring the object during the printing process. The apparatus also has a controller operatively coupled with the measuring device. The controller is configured to control the measuring device to measure the object at one or more prescribed points in the printing process (i.e., before the object is manufactured).
