PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical attenuator which can be driven with a low voltage and is practical. ! SOLUTION: The optical attenuator comprises: a collimator 20 for holding two lengths of optical fiber (23i, 23o); a triangular prism 30; a first birefringent element 41 for separating light from the rear into a first optical path of extraordinary light and a second optical path of normal light; a first non-reciprocal part 50 for emitting vertically and laterally oscillating light tracing the first and second optical paths backward, as laterally oscillating light; a second birefringent element 42 for making vertically oscillating light to be extraordinary light; a second non-reciprocal part 60 for emitting laterally oscillating light tracing the first and second optical paths backward, as laterally and vertically oscillating light; a light deflection part 10 composed of first and second electro-optical elements (10u, 10d), holding an electro-optical substance 12 between lateral and vertical elec |
