This lead storage battery comprises: groups of electrode plates in which cathode plates provided with a cathode lattice and a cathode active material, and anode plates provided with an anode lattice and an anode active material are stacked together with the interposition of separators; and a battery container having cell chambers which accommodate at least one group of electrode plates. Of the side surfaces of the battery container, the outside of the side surface that is orthogonal to the direction of stacking of the cathode plates and the anode plates is provided with a plurality of lattice openings formed by the intersection of a plurality of ribs protruding out from said side surface. The cathode lattices are expandable lattices in which a plurality of mesh openings formed by lattice struts are provided below an upper frame strut. If the open surface area per lattice opening in the battery container is A, and the open surface area per mesh opening in the cathode lattice is B, then the ratio of the open surfaces B/A is at least 0.4 and at most 1.5.
