A method for controlling an internal combustion engine having a crankshaft includes the steps of determining a rotational energy of the running internal combustion engine at predefined angular positions of the crankshaft, extrapolating the rotational energy for a future angular position from the determined rotational energies and turning off the internal combustion engine if the extrapolated rotational energy lies below the predefined threshold value.
