LABYRINTH SEAL SWAGE COUPLING FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE/PRESSURE REINFORCED RUBBER HOSE AND METHODS OF ATTACHMENT

A Specialized Fitting and a Method of Manufacture for swaging hose couplings to high pressure, high temperature reinforced rubber hose having a corrugated or smooth plastic/nylon/elastomer or metal lining (inner tube). The method discloses four embodiments for manufacturing a complete hose assembly from stock hose and discloses a technique for ensuring a labyrinth seal between the inner tube and the hose coupling. The method results in a hose assembly that will meet or exceed the requirements of the American Petroleum Institute for Choke and Kill Hose and/or Rotary Drilling hose.

A method for attaching a reinforced rubber hose having an inner lining to an end connector having a stem and a ferrule incorporating a sine-wave lock means between the stem and the ferrule and wherein the end connector is capable of forming a labyrinth seal within the sine-wave lock means between the inner tube of the reinforced rubber hose and the stem of the end connector comprising:
a) preparing properly the reinforced rubber hose by;
a1) making ready the inside of the reinforced rubber hose, anda2) skiving the outside of the reinforced rubber hose to expose the outside reinforcement in the region of the reinforced rubber hose which will be in contact with the ferrule; b) inserting said properly prepared reinforced rubber hose into the end connector such that the exposed outside reinforcement is contained within the ferrule of the end connector and the stem thereof is contained within said made ready inside of the reinforced rubber hose; and c) swaging the ferrule of the end connector through use of the correct swage die so as to form the required labyrinth seal between the inner tube of the reinforced rubber hose and the stem of the end connector within the sine-wave lock means while also securing the reinforced rubber hose to the end connector.
