An alkaline accumulator is provided with superimposed horizontally arranged sintered electrodes which are in the form of thin discs separated by porous insulating sheets. The container can be closed hermetically by.a stopper, the gases evolved during charging being caused to combine with one another by the catalytic effect of the active material of the electrodes. In order to ensure the correct proportion of hydrogen and oxygen, the gases evolved in the early stages of charging which contain an excess of hydrogen are allowed to escape from the cell which is subsequently closed. The Figure shows a cell in which the cathode discs 10 make contact round their peripheries with the metal container 2, the anodes 9 being attached to a metal rod 11 secured to the stopper 6 which also serves as a terminal. A screw-threaded nut 8 co-operates with the stopper 6 to seal the container. The discs 9, 10 are separated by insulating sheets 12. When the cell is assembled, the anodes may be in the charged condition while the cathodes are uncharged, whereby excess of hydrogen in the evolved gases is avoided. |
