An apparatus for visualisation of the respiratory cycle comprises an accelerometer 12 contained within a housing 10 placed in contact with a users body and configured to generate a signal in response to the bodys motion, and a processor 16 configured to receive the signal, process it and cause a display means 20 to display in real time a visual representation 24 of the users respiratory cycle. The apparatus can be a smart phone or a tablet device, and may be further configured to determine the respiratory rate and depth or regularity of breathing of the user, and display it along with a waveform representation of the breathing cycle. A waveform analysis in the frequency domain of the signal can identify periodic deflections of small amplitude and thus determine the heart rate and variability thereof, to display along with the respiratory data. The apparatus may comprise a user interface so that the user can provide instances at predetermined timepoints relative to the respiratory cycle, and the synchronisation can indicate the self-awareness of the user. The measured physiological parameters can be compared to predetermined thresholds and a notification can be issued if it is reached. |
