A method of connecting metals having different thermal expansion rates to one another includes the steps of: (i) pre-heat treating a transition plate 13 along with a first metal 11; (ii) welding the transition plate to the first metal; (iii) stress relieving the resulting weld; and (iv) welding a second metal 12 to the transition plate. Preferably, the first metal 11 is a high-carbon forged steel, and the second metal 12 is DH36 steel or a stainless steel containing 18% Ni, 20% Cr, 6.1% Mo, 0.2% N and 0.01% C. The method is particularly useful for welding a rudder stock (the first metal 11) to a rudder blade (the second metal 12). |
