A mobile device transmits a location request to an access point in a WiFi or a Wireless Local Area Network WLAN and receives a comeback delay, which specifies a time delay to wait before retransmitting the request. The access point transmits a request to the mobile device to perform a beacon measurement scan, monitors the Received Signal Strength Indication RSSI and/or Received Channel Power Indication RCPI of beacons from access points within range and returns measurements to the access point. The mobile device transmits a subsequent location request to the access point after the comeback delay has expired and subsequently receives a location estimate based on the beacon measurements from within range access points combined with their known locations. The location determination of a mobile device may alternatively be performed using the flight times of WiFi Timing Measurement Action Frames or WiFi Timing Measurement Request Frames for a plurality of access points. |
